Guadalupe

Guadalupe is the first Mexican-American in my immediate family. Growing up in America brings a lot of insecurities; from trying to learn a new language, to the way I dress. I am neither from here, nor there. My hometown in Huajuapan de Leon Oaxaca, started to seclude me because I am growing up in America, and America secluded me for being from another country. These are just some of the prejudices Guadalupe will have to face even as an American citizen. At five years-old, she is slowly realizing what the color of her skin means, the etymology of her name, and the reason why many aren’t so pleased at how long and beautiful her hair is: even though it's her greatest attribute. I want to show Guadalupe that the opinions of others shouldn’t change her own views or beliefs. Being a chicana is an opportunity to appreciate and take pride in both cultures equally. These portraits are to show Guadalupe about her Mexican heritage; capturing her in traditional Mexican clothing, hair, and accessories. While also showing her American side; the way she combines both cultures to develop her own personality and confidence. These photographs will show a small glimpse of what it is like to be Mexican-American.
