Throughout the time I was photographing my younger sister as the first Chicana in our family, directed me to start exploring generational traumas and the differences between our upbringings. It eventually led me to do more research about young Latinos in America, and discovered many common challenges among first generation U.S. citizens and those born in their Latin country who are currently living here. An example is having to balance assimilation in the United States while preserving the culture in which they came from, that often leads to a questioning in identity. Traveling between Rockland County and New York City, I photographed and audio recorded young descendants and people born in Latin America, to exhibit their commonality yet diverse lives. These series of portraits are printed in large scale alongside audio from my subjects, to get a variety of perspectives from different parts of Latin America, and to form a connection between my subject and the listener as they listen to their stories being directly told by them. Through first-person narrative audio recordings and environmental portraits, I seeked out to find other challenges faced by younger Latinos in New York and to highlight topics we don’t often talk about as a community nor hear about in the media . This work was not only inspired by my personal experiences, research and conversations with other young Latinos, but also by artists such as, Alejandro Cartagena’s Between Borders, and Griselda San Martin’s Musulmana: Muslim Women in Mexico; that deal with similar social issues.
